Firearms Safe Surrender Program

The Safe Surrender Program provides a confidential, judgment-free opportunity for veterans, first responders, and their families to temporarily surrender firearms during times of personal crisis. Designed to reduce suicide risk and support mental health, the program ensures safe firearm handling, secure off-site storage, and access to compassionate care without the involvement of law enforcement unless specifically requested. Our goal is to prioritize safety, dignity, and recovery — empowering individuals to take a courageous step toward stability and support.

Firearm Safe Surrender - FAQ

What is the Safe Surrender Program?

The Safe Surrender Program provides a secure and supportive environment for veterans and first responders in crisis to temporarily surrender their firearms. The program is designed to reduce the risk of suicide and other crises involving firearms by offering a non-punitive, confidential option for firearm storage and later return.

Who is eligible to participate?

The program is open to veterans, first responders, and their loved ones who feel they may be at risk due to a crisis situation. Our goal is to provide a safe way to relinquish firearms without fear of judgment or legal repercussions.

Will law enforcement be involved?

No, law enforcement is not involved in the Safe Surrender Program unless there is a specific request from the individual or an imminent threat to public safety. This allows individuals to safely use our program without fear of legal action or repercussions.

Where are firearms collected and stored?

Firearms are collected in neutral, private locations such as community centers or parking lots. Collected firearms are temporarily stored in a secure, off-site facility until they are requested for return.

What happens during the firearm surrender process? The process is straightforward and designed with your privacy in mind:

  • Schedule an appointment by calling our hotline or completing an online form.

  • Meet with two trained staff members at a neutral location. One member is skilled in firearm handling, and the other is trained in crisis intervention.

  • The firearm will be secured and stored off-site in a locked container until it is time for its return.

Can a third party surrender a firearm on someone else’s behalf?

Yes, a third party can surrender a firearm on behalf of someone else, provided they follow our guidelines for safe transport and complete a brief verification process. The third party’s information and authorization are required.

Is there any paperwork involved?

Yes, but we keep documentation to a minimum. We will verify the firearm’s make, model, and serial number but avoid collecting unnecessary details that might discourage participation. A simple chain of custody will be maintained to ensure the firearm is secure and accountable.

How do I get my firearm back?

When you’re ready to retrieve your firearm, simply contact us with at least 48 hours' notice to schedule a return appointment. You’ll need to bring government-issued ID and, if using a third party for pickup, ensure they have proper authorization. The firearm will be returned in a secure case to ensure safe transport.

What if I change my mind and no longer want my firearm back?

If you decide not to retrieve your firearm, we can assist you in finding responsible alternatives, such as safe transfer to a trusted third party or other appropriate options. Our goal is to support you throughout this process.

Is my identity kept confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a top priority for the Safe Surrender Program. Personal information and program involvement are securely protected, and no public or law enforcement records are created unless required for safety.

What kind of mental health support is available?

We offer on-site mental health professionals and crisis intervention experts during collection to provide support and guidance. Follow-up services and resource referrals are also available to participants at no cost.

How do I know this program is safe?

Safety is at the core of our program. Our collection sites and storage facilities are secure, and all personnel are trained in firearm handling and mental health crisis intervention. The entire process is designed to be discreet, supportive, and non-judgmental.
